
It was April 1931 that the first highway code was issued in the UK. Over the next thirty years society would change in ways that people would never have though possible, and with that transportation and public expectations of movement would also change forever.
The code, therefore, became a regularly amended document. It was never law, you could never be prosecuted for breaching the code itself. But the code gave an interesting mix of legal requirement (the laws behind the statements you could be prosecuted for breaching) and common courtesy.
