I've never actually planned a holiday with cycling specifically in mind, but occasionally it's a nice little backdrop to a trip. That will be no more evident than late March with a trip to Copenhagen. A chance to see first hand the original Copenhagenisation, meet with some interesting people, and ride in a city that promises to be as close to a cycling nirvana as you're likely to get.
On home turf it feels as far away from that as ever at the moment, with roadworks grinding the city to a halt, peple being urged to use 'alternative' transport, but nothing being put in place to make that attractive (bike lanes are sealed off to allow contractors' vehicles to park, and useful cut throughs are completely blocked).
Ironic, perhaps, that it is at this moment that Edinburgh sees a visiting cycling exhibition from Copenhagen (see how nicely circular that was?). The exhibition runs for a couple of months, with events taking place throughout that time, and is reported on in more detail in this issue. It served as a reminder about how far we still have to go, so that cycling doesn't have to be thought about in terms of provision - it's just done as a matter of course.
But I fully expect to come back from Copenhagen as full of frustration at cycling in this country as I have ever had. Happy frustration, perhaps, having experienced something good, but frustration nonetheless...
