.being
an 'art' radio station do you see cycling as an art
in itself, or the bicycle as a work of art?
Bikes
are tools - and with any tool you can use it to express
yourself, to make art. The artist Hamish Fulton says
his long distance walks are his art, so i guess there's
no reason why cycling can't be considered an art in
itself. For me, I'm more interested in why so many
creative people have an affinity for cycling. From
HG Wells to Sartre to last year's Turner Prize winner
Jeremy Deller. I think there is something very expressive
about the freedom that cycling brings, and the exhileration
of so many images flashing past. I had a psychologist
on the show in April who explained that cycling (along
with other kinds of repetitive exercise like walking
or swimming) can increase the brain's alpha-waves,
which are thought to be the source of creative thinking.
.is
there any aspect of cycling which you won't cover?
I
want the show to be as open as possible, so no, there's
nothing i wouldn't think about covering. It may be
that in some cases it'd be better for someone else
to cover a particular subject rather than for me to
do it. I don't really fancy trying to keep up with
the riders in the Race Across America.
.are
there any plans for the station to broadcast outside
London?
Resonance
FM broadcasts on a Community FM license which restricts
stations to a fairly local broadcast, in our case,
Central London. But it it possible to tune in live
via broadband internet and to access the archive of
past shows via the podcast facility. People are already
tuning in from more than a dozen - from California
to Australia to Thailand.
.john
peel or dave lee travis?
John
Peel definitely. He's sorely missed.
.thanks
