Dear Mr McWheeler

I have a five year old daughter who has recently started school. Naturally I am concerned about her safety taking her to school. As the school is half a mile away walking is impractical, and cycling is too dangerous with all the cars on the road around her school. My Golf seems inadequate so I was considering a new Volvo estate or SUV. What would you suggest?

Dear Concerned Mother

Well done for thinking carefully about cycling and the dangers. Driving your child to school is your right - you may be driving to work anyway. Either you do it or someone not as nice (or well off) as you will take your space. One hidden benefit is that you can sit in your car and avoid having to speak to any teachers or (worse still) children. Many children now behave so badly that taking refuge in your car is the only civilised option.

Check out the new Volvo V50 sportwagon or the Honda HR-V. Both companies demonstrate their awareness of ‘green’ issues in their TV ads. Lots of room as well to carry her bike to the school bike training classes. For some tougher schools a big Toyota or Humvee might be worth considering.
