Every month here at citycycling we bring you some of the best cycling sites we've found on the net. This month we've gone a bit 'statto' for cyclogs...
We're quite partial to stats at cc Towers, you only need to see all of the 'numbers games' we've done to know that! But every bike in the fleet also has a cycle computer. There's just a nice feeling of knowing how far you've come or gone - rather than it being a target or driver for the ride (which we know some people see them as).
So we really like cyclogs. Even more so after a recent makeover following a shift to a new, faster, server. This really is just a site to log your rides, but it has a whole host of nice ideas on top of that.
But let's start at the beginning, in 2003, with the untimely and unexpected demise of bikelogpro.com. Jules, 'a web developer/software designer by trade with a passion for cycling (and stats)', decided that the only thing to do was set up a replacement.
Graphs and stats galore Jules maintains that the original site, and the second version, were merely thrown together. But the numbers of registered users was impressive as Jules hoped to maintain a 'community' feel that was present on bikelogpro. The latest incarnation is the third version of the site, and has been redeveloped from the ground up.
A chance to put together some new ideas (though things like text entry of your rides is just not feasible on a shared hosting account. Nevertheless the features are gradually coming back online, with each new addition adding to the fun, and time wasting ability, of the site.
Jules works on cyclogs at lunch hours, with evenings reserved for family time - something which just highlights the achievement in developing such a user friendly site.
