But
it's really in understanding what drives cyclists,
and their reactions to certain things, that drives
this cartoon strip. Rick's research was simply riding
to work over a two year period, and overhearing conversations
in bike stores. In January the characters were born,
and things started regularly on 22nd January 2008.
Since
then virtually every strip has carried a thought or
idea which most of us will have experienced already,
or understand. Some ideas are taken to extremes (such
as the over-protective mother insisting her son dons
a helmet to try out a bike in the shop); others are
straightforward cycling advocacy (signs telling cyclists
to stop and walk); and some just there for the humour
value (customers buying bikes that are never going
to be ridden; the bike ninja; thwacking a bike thief
with a U-lock).

One
story line got me wondering, however, where a few
strips seem to be suggesting that bike lanes are the
solution to all our problems. I ask Rick if this is
his own view: "Nope, and Yehuda will figure
this out (as will the community). I wrote the following
to a reader: "Yehuda's
a misguided advocate, though his heart is in the right
place when he wants to carve out a piece of the asphalt
for cyclists. He sees a time in the not-so-distant
future when automobiles own the road (completely),
and travel on them at speeds above 35mph regularly.
This will leave no room on the roads for cyclists,
thus relegating them to the ghetto that is the bike
path - that recreational disaster that meanders and
never transports its commuters to their destination
in a timely fashion. Painting the bike lanes just
staves off the inevitable for a bit longer."
Like
any cartoonist Rick has his influences (Chester Gould
(Dick Tracy - from the 60s and 70s); James Kochalka
(American Elf); Seth (Wimbledon Green); Jack Kirby
(Marvel Comics)) but Yehuda Moon carries its own distinctive
look, although even this look has evolved in the small
space of time the strip has been running.
And
in that small time Yehuda seems to have picked up
quite a following. We've got it firmly planted in
our favourites here at cc Towers, and can only suggest
that you do the same by visiting
the Yehuda Moon website.
