.the
new mobility agenda is an international institution,
ostensibly based in paris, but operating internationally
as a virtual and open collaborative. Since 1974 the
it has exchanged information and worked towards inproving
trasport and ideologies the world over. New mobility
is subtely different from sustainable transport, and
here we set out the five main themes behind the organisation.
We hope in future issues to expand on this as New
Mobility develops a series of working papers on cycling,
and next month editor Anthony Robson will meet Eric
Britton, convener of 'The Commons', an open expert
network within the New Mobility Agenda.
.one:
sustainable development and social justice
This
is really the starting point to work from, and indeed,
to. A circular aim which not only looks after the
future in terms of making life in the abstract better,
but by actually securing economic development - which
is really one in the eye for naysayers who think that
moving towards different, more beneficial, modes of
transport will be damaging because the economy relies
on the car.
.two:
"two cheers for the market (not three)"
A
quote from Arthur Okun, advisor to President John
F Kennedy. Basically the private sector market has
a (very large) role to playin development, and we
need to find ways to 'harness and dynamise' the entrepreneurial
flair which no doubt exists. There does, however,
have to be a safety net in the form of fairly controlled
governance (or 'guide rails'). Finding the balance
therein is one of the hardest tasks at hand.
