Events
in the ‘Derailleur Code’ have
now taken a more sinister turn and may even
become moderately exciting. The 'civilised'
world's arch opponent Der Bromptonaut has
created chaos throughout Western Sweden. His
weapon? What to any normal person would look
just like an ordinary bike hub is in fact
an extremely volatile prototype of a new form
of bike propulsion. The original of this design
was stolen from the M7 Human and Alternative
Powered Vehicle Company near
Amsterdam many chapters ago. Since then
Der Bromptonaut has managed to make copies
of the design. The M7 AM10 36 spoke hub has
to be kept moving in order to avoid going
critical. One that was 'gifted' by Der Bromptonaut
to the Bikea Store in arberg has since exploded
violently causing a total black out and showering
a large part of western Sweden with cut price
bike parts.
In
response the government in Stockholm has ordered
a state of emergency with all routes in and
out of the region blocked. The Swiss Bike
Patrol's special train cannot move without
power. Doctor Moeller, Captain Tobler, Detective
Wallender and advisor Herr Braun remain on
the train. A detachment of four Swiss Bike
Patrol officers make a sortie but have found
themselves boxed in by Swedish security forces.
Professor Dawes and the ever-resourceful Lucyna
pursue their enemy by breaking through much
of the military cordon by using the state-of-the-art
M7 Ultratandem Velomobile on the main railway
line. Unfortunately this plan has now failed.
Both Dawes and Lucyna are now being held separately
in Falkenberg by the Swedish Police who are
unaware of the danger posed by Der Bromptonaut
and dismissive of the whole story. During
intensive questioning Dawes is given reason
to question Lucyna's whole role in the affair.
Has he got involved in something that he doesn't
fully understand? Kilometres away on the immobilised
Swiss Bike Patrol train Doctor Moeller, Detective
Wallender and the often silent Her Braun have
just sent for help using a satellite phone
powered by a bike dynamo. Herr Braun keeps
checking his watch to see whether another
whole chapter will pass in darkness or whether
the story will ever emerge into daylight.
