Fortunately,
whilst recently poking around the garage I rediscovered
my two bikes and it ignited a spark which has been
missing for so long, so I pumped up the deflated tyres,
blew the dust away and went for a quick spin. Although
my technique left something to be desired, a clown
riding a toy bike springs to mind, it brought back
the fond memories of why I cycled in the first place,
I now worked in an office full time and as most office
workers know, it can be dull, unrewarding and stressful
and that’s just the daily commute, not to mention
the weight gain from being parked on my backside all
day, I desperately needed a release. For the half
an hour I was on the bike blasting around the local
woods, which now seemed very small indeed, all problems
with life just melted away, all that was relevant
was me, the bike and the perfect trails my tyres would
inevitably leave their mark on. A HUGE grin suddenly
streamed across my face and all was well with the
world.
This
rediscovered joy of cycling has led me to buy my first
new bike for around 7 years in the shape of a Giant
Trance; I have also dug out the old Merida road bike
and taken part in my beloved time trails. More recently
I have built up a steel framed hard tail, built with
carefully selected parts, which was, more or less,
completed on Christmas day.
My
colleagues might take the piss about me and my obsession
with cycling, but on the bike, and about bikes, I'll
never be that chocolate teapot.
