Not
really one specific bike this month, but a great collection
from an American framebuilder. The name, Alternative
Needs Transportation (A.N.T. for short) gives you
the ethos here, which is exanded on in their website
- "We not only hope to meet the needs of
people's commuter bikes, but to influence the consumers
to think about bicycle commuting in a more positive
way. We love all types of cycling but feel that there
is a real need to bring to the table bikes that have
the right combination of style and function that is
so lacking in the market. Most people have this fear
of investing in a bike for commuting, but it is their
most-used bike!"
Well
if ever there was a framebuilder that a publication
like 'citycycling' would warm to!
While
the Boston
Roadster, the Light
Roadster, and even the 29er
and XO
can be seen as perfect utility commuting bikes, there's
something particularly nice about the Major
Taylor, with its distinctive truss frame. And
there's always something nice about a custom made
steel frame (though real fans of the retro will miss
the use of lugs - it has to be said that the TIG welded
joins look clean as a whistle).
But
the best bit of every bike? The bit that has been
noticed on blogs around the world? That fantastic
headtube badge. A worn and rusty-looking plate with
the letters A, N and T cut out into the shape of an
ant. Perfect.
You
can find out more about A.N.T. bikes at their
