In this new feature
we look at a particular bike each month which has
caught our eye. It might be the colour, the simplicity,
the engineering. All that we know is it's something
that looks good to us, and that's good enough. Our
first Bike of the Month is the Rivendell Saluki...
Salukis
are thought to be one of the oldest breeds of domesticated
dog, apparently referred to as the Royal Dogs of Egypt.
There is certainly something majestic and graceful
about the poise of the dogs, and the way they move
with balance and speed.
Beauty,
it would seem, is inherent in the name, if Rivendell's
650B-wheeled 'do-it-all' bike is anything to go by.
At
first the orange-brown colour might seem garish, but
combined with the right saddle and bar tape there's
a certain timeless feel about the package. With bags
of tyre clearance racks and 'guards can be applied,
or larger 'cross tyres can be fitted.
The
650B wheels are their with comfort in mind, eating
up audax distances. Cantis or sidepulls can be used,
and then there's the gorgeous head tube lugwork and
contrasting cream colour.
Last
week I was determined to pick out a Mercian to build
up next year for doing some long distance rides and
touring. Now I'm not so sure.
A
Rivendell Saluki could easily become my best friend...
