1991 Tour de France (Villeurbanne)

1. Gardner Martin
A racing recumbent guru who built his first bike in 1975. Started the EasyRacers store and proved an inspiration to many. Sadly Gardner passed away in 2004 following a lengthy illness leading to tributes from around the world to his incredible legacy, not least from his friend and business partner...

2. Freddy Markham
Known as 'Fast' Freddy, he had set the world 1km record the day before in 'Gold Rush'. Irrepressible speed demon (in 1979 he was the first person to top 50mph on an unassisted bicycle, and at time of writing has set 20 world records). Owns and runs easyracers.com, American recumbent specialists.

3. Gilbert Chabroux
Mayor of Villeurbanne in 1991; and Rhone Senator from 1995 to 2004. Now 74 years old.

5. Jean-Marie Leblanc
It doesn't look like him, but we're assured it is... Jean-Marie was Tour director from 1989 to 2005. He retired in 2005, replaced by Christian Prudhomme. Director of the Tour of Qatar for a couple of years, but has now retired to play music, playing clarinet in a jazz ensemble in Paris.

6. Greg Lemond
3 times Tour winner (and one time shotgun victim). By 1991 his powers were on the wane, finishing 7th overall. Founded LeMond Bicycles and has an acrimonious relationship with Trek who build and distribute the bikes (especially following some undiplomatic comments about Lance Armstrong).
