Famed
for oil, fish, and being rather cold you might not
think that within Aberdeen there would be a route
that would take you from 500 year old buildings, to
river forest, and wind up with you taking a stroll
along an extensive sea front. Andy
Sim takes us for a spin...
Taking in the grandeur
of Old Aberdeen, using quiet cobbled streets, and
off road paths through parks, by rivers, and by the
sea shore, this short circular route of 6.5 miles
will show you the best Aberdeen has to offer, and
is ideal for a family ride.
King’s
College in Aberdeen is perhaps one of the most identifiable
buildings in the city, and standing on the cobbles
outside to start this ride there is no reason to wonder
why, the large crowned dome forming a striking landmark.
Heading north from this point you’re passing
through the main campus of the University of Aberdeen
– full of 500 year old history and grand old
buildings, it can be a peaceful spot, but at the first
sign of sun the large lawn in front of the Elphinstone
Hall becomes awash with students.
Crossing Market Loan
onto the Chanonry this is where some of the big old
houses of Aberdeen are kept, tucked away behind large
gates on the road which leads to St Machar’s
Cathedral, an imposing gothic building overlooking
Seaton Park.
