Every
month in our ACF
Blogspace we will be running a poll on various
cycling issues. In February we wanted to know what
you thought the best traffic innovations for cyclists
were. The results might surprise some of those who
maintain they know what is best for cyclists and what
they want and require...
The
least beneficial facilities were two items constantly
trumpeted as leading a cycling revolution in getting
people out on their bikes, cycle paths and sustrans
routes polling only 4.5% each. Cycle lanes didn't
fare much better with a surprisingly low 9%. It seems
cyclists are happier with facilities for when they
have to stop, ASLs gaining a fair amount of support
- but the winner by a long way was actually bike specific
traffic lights, almost half the votes cast went for
this option.
There
was, however, an undercurrent of support for a rather
more prosaic option. The roads.
Perhaps
it's that the majority of people responding are confident
cyclists, but the feeling is that we belong on the
roads, that they are not the sole domain of the car,
and that many of the new-fangled ideas for 'improving'
cycling are simply tucking us out of mind.
Whatever
the reasoning it seems that the official lines of
application are ever so slightly at odds with the
views of the majority of regular cyclists - encouraging
new cyclists is a worthy notion, but often it can
come at the expense of those who are already bitten
by the bug.
.cycle
lanes - Nope, they're usually in the
gutter or "killing zone" where car
doors open
.cycle paths - Nope, they usually
take a roundabout route, are badly surfaced
and not maintained.
.ASLs - Nope, why should I
place myself in a position of danger at a road
junction?
.bike specific traffic lights
- Best option so far.
.sustrans routes through urban areas
- You're having a laugh aren't you?
.other - "the road network"
would be a big contender for me.

This
month we've decided to take up one particularly popular
cycling option of-the-moment, Sustrans. Do you use
the routes they provide? Do they go where you want
to go?
To
contribute to the debate head to the poll
and let your feelings known.
