We've
all been there - quite happily cycling along the road
when out of the blue a car, saving a precious few seconds
rather than waiting until we've passed a junction, drives
past and cuts us up. Mention to many avid car drivers
that you cycle to work and you will often be met with
a mixture of disbelief and distaste. And then recounting
the tales of having run the gauntlet each morning to
work colleagues garners little other than questions
as to why you cycle when the roads are so dangerous.
Blowing
off steam isn't easy - and then came Raging Bike. The
name itself strikes a chord with the feeling of many
cyclists and delving in you find that you are certainly
not alone.
Tales
of near misses, cyclicidal driving and plain ignorance
get regular airings - and it's all thanks to one man
and his breached breaking point.

.vital stats: name, age, location,
bikes
Euan,
43, Edinburgh, Specialized, Edinburgh Bike Co-Op, British
Eagle.
.when did you first get into riding?
When
I was 4, then a bit more seriously living in Belgium
as a teenager.
.do you commute to work on your bike?
Not
as much as I would like given my current 120 miles commute,
but I've commuted off and on since I was 19. On average
3 days a week over the last 25 odd years. I should add
I am a driver as well.
.what
prompted you to start the website?
For
several years I had a 12 mile round trip commute from
north-west Edinburgh to Leith for several years. Apart
from the other cyclists at work, I had no way to express
my anger at the inconsiderate, careless and downright
murderous behaviour of car drivers. In the last 20 years
I have been hit and/or been deliberately targeted by
drivers innumerable times, many of these incidents were
in cycle lanes. Initially I wanted RB simply to be a
forum where cyclists could let off steam, but I felt
by showing cyclists how they contributed to lowering
greenhouse emissions could be a positive step. The emissions
calculator is a fairly nice piece of code. We also built
a groups emissions calculator for companies to measure
their savings when introducing cycle policies. And for
those of us with spreading waistlines it was essential
we put in the calorie counter and BMI measurements!
